Honoring Red: The Legacy of A Pinnacle Herd Member
September 13, 2024
With heavy hearts, we share that our cherished equine partner, Red, has laid down for a final rest on September 13, 2024. His hoofprints left an indelible mark on the grounds of Naples Therapeutic Riding Center (NTRC) and the hearts of all who knew him.
Red was much more than a horse at NTRC. He was a teacher, a healer, a confidant, and a cherished partner. He touched countless lives, helping riders of all ages and abilities find joy, confidence, and peace in the saddle. As lead instructor Lea Haven shared, “Nearly everyone in the equestrian community of Collier County has a story to tell about Red.” He taught individuals in numerous disciplines how to ride gracefully, jump with courage, love without bounds, and heal.
Over nearly ten years at NTRC, Red defined what being a therapeutic equine partner means. His empathy, resilience, and willingness to connect made him a favorite among participants, staff, and volunteers.
In the spring of 2024, NTRC decided that Red deserved a retirement worthy of his extraordinary service. He was trailered to Camp Rusk, a serene 400-acre ranch in Texas dedicated to caring for retired therapeutic horses in a natural, loving environment. Red left us with bright eyes, eager for adventure alongside his dear friend Fancy. In his final months, he experienced the joy of roaming green pastures, exploring rolling hills, and forming new bonds with a band of horses who welcomed him as their own.
Red’s passing was due to natural causes, and he faced this transition with a calmness and dignity that reflected his gentle soul. Even in his final days, he seemingly knew his journey was nearing its end, finding peace in the beauty and freedom that surrounded him.
We extend our deepest sympathy to everyone in our community who loved Red. His spirit will forever be a part of NTRC, living on in the memories of all individuals who share time with him. Our community stands united, embracing one another in love and support as we remember Red.
